parliament.

Sulaimaniyah, Kurdistan region 'Iraq':
Interview with Salar Aziz
Salar Aziz, a member of the management board of
Wisha Company and a former leader in Patriotic Union
of Kurdistan (PUK) says that Change List’s
preparations for elections campaign in most of the
towns and cities of Kurdistan are completed.
Q: Are you going
to campaign everywhere in Kurdistan?
Aziz: We have
been able to create a system (of bases) everywhere
and we made preparation in most of the cities and
towns. |

Q: Some people say that so far Nawshirwan Mustafa has
not taken any administrative posts so that they can
judge his performance and to get an idea on how is
he going to bring about change. Do you think this
might hurt the list in the election?
Aziz: Mr.
Nawshirwan does not think about becoming the
president of Kurdistan or Prime Minister. As a
veteran (politician) he runs for the elections to
create a more organized parliament which can address
the shortcomings of the region and improve the
situation.
Q: Does this
mean that if you win in the elections he will give
the administrative post to other people?
Aziz: He will
not hand over administrative posts to people. What
is important to us is to have a sincere, courageous,
and patriotic people be elected to the parliament in
order to defend the rights of people. We just want
this and we have nothing to do with government or
appointing people (to government). In fact,www.ekurd.net
Mr. Nawshirwan wants to
create a brave parliament and nothing more.
Q: Do you mean
that the current parliament is not active.
Aziz: The
current parliament has no authority. It is under the
control of the two dominating parties in Kurdistan.
This parliament has not been able to create the
power of the judicial authority in a way it can
govern everything… the judicial authority is the
most important authority but now in Kurdistan
everyone can interfere with courts and works of
judges... We want the judicial authority to be above
all the other authorities.
Q: For the past
few weeks leaders of PUK have been, directly or
indirectly, criticizing Nawshirwan Mustafa. But he
does not respond to them. Is this because he does
not want to further upset them?
Aziz: Mr.
Nawshirwan has not nominated himself for the
presidencies of Kurdistan or Iraq or the post of
prime minister. Then why they should make such
statements? We are waiting for the parliamentary
elections and everyone is free to run for the
elections with a separate list. We have not made a
coup and we are not against any party or
individual... Some people want to belittle our
efforts by attributing these (attacks).
What we have accomplished exceeds and liberates us
from party-style works and disputes. All the
incomplete experiences of the past have been lessons
for us. We have learned a different style of work.
We want to re-introduce a beautiful image of the
region to our friends and foes. Therefore we want an
active parliament not a parliament obedient to the
(political) parties.
The unity of people can be achieved through forming
an independent parliament, not through a strategic
pact between the two main parties that prolongs
their power…It is not important for us who will be
upset or happy with us. Our massage is that all
people of Kurdistan want the rule of law,www.ekurd.net
transparency, services,
and justice. But (some) people want to downplay our
effort by tying it to personal issues. However, we
don't pay attention to them.
Q: Some
observers expect violence during the elections. Do
you expect such a situation while some people
believe that your list may take half of the votes of
PUK supporters?
Aziz: We do not
expect this situation unless they instigate
violence. We don’t have an army. Besides, the
government is theirs; they have to keep the security
so that no one dares to commit any violation against
any list or faction.
Q: The strange
thing for people was the negotiations of your list
with the Kurdistan Islamic Movement (KIM). What can
bring you together with KIM while you yourselves do
not regard this party's ruling experience as a
successful one?
Aziz: We have
said earlier that we will participate in the
elections as single independent list and we do not
form coalition with any other lists. If we see it
necessary we will form alliance with a list on the
condition that the list will adhere to our
(election) program.
Q: When the
results of the elections are announced will your
condition for executing the program of Change List
be on for your alliances
Aziz: Certainly,
it will.
Q: Some critics
of Nawshirwan Mustafa accuse him of vying for power,
particularly the leadership of PUK, what is your
reaction to this kind of accusations?
Aziz: This is
not right. Mr. Nawshirwan does not fight for power
inside PUK. He was the deputy secretary-general of
PUK. If he had fought for positions he would not
have given up his position (in PUK).
Q: But what
strengthens this rumor is that till now he is not
ready to announce his separation from PUK and leave
PUK
Aziz: We were
PUK members, why should we leave the party? It is
more than 30 years we are working in PUK why we
should separate from the party?
Q: PUK is due to
hold a congress and some say that the aim behind
such a congress is to dismiss you from PUK.
Aziz: We are not
much concerned about the congress as we are
concerned about the change of our region. Their
decisions are up to them.
Q: They say that
some of those people whom Nawshirwan has promised to
include their names in the list, have turned their
back against Mustafa when they have found out that
they will not be nominated. Is that true?
Aziz: This is
not true at all. Mr. Nawshirwan has not promised
anything to anyone. No one has asked or was asked to
be nominated.
