German parliamentary
delegation reviews HR issues with KRG
Erbil: Head of the human rights committee of the
German parliament, who are currently visiting Iraq
leading a delegation of German lawmakers, said on
Monday that they discussed with an official from the
Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) a number of
issues related to human rights, woman and freedoms.
“We discussed with Kurdish lawmakers the forced
marriage of little girls and circumcision, as well
as violence against women,” she said at a press
conference held at the German consulate in Erbil.
The MP pointed out that she met with the speaker of
Kurdistan’s parliament, Adnan al-Mufti, the
representative of the Red Cross and a number of
journalists to discuss human rights condition in the
northern region.
Kurdistan ties up
preparations for elections (alsumaria tv)
Kurdistan Region Electoral Commission has finalized
its plan for holding the regional elections
scheduled next May. The head of the Elections
Commission in the region Ali Qader told radio SAWA
that the voters register was ready as well as the
registration of the entities and observers, to that
the needed “modest” budget for the operation was
allocated.
Furthermore, the source added that the plan will be
sent to the head of the commission in order to
approve it and to start working accordingly. As to
the extent of authorities’ cooperation in the region
in order to bring the elections to success, Qader
stressed that the authorities are cooperating in all
the fields in order to provide security and schools
premises and other factor necessary for the holding
of the elections.
Kurdistan Region delegation
to participate in coexistence and religious
tolerance conference
A delegation headed by KRG minister of religious
endowments Muhammad Shakly and includes a number of
religious men and intellectual figures of other
religions and doctrines on Tuesday, Feb. 24, will
head to Jordan capital Amman then to Johannesburg in
South Africa as a response to an invitation by
Marasan and Hativil churches to participate in the
coexistence and religious tolerance conference
there.
President Barzani
reiterates commitment to Iraqi constitution
Kurdistan Region President Massoud Barzani on
Sunday, Feb. 22, met with the top U.S commander in
Iraq General Raymond Odierno, in Saladin Resort.
They discussed the Iraqi situation in general,
Odierno emphasized his and the U.S administration
support to Kurdistan people, and expressed his
delight to the ongoing developments in Kurdistan
region. He also talked about the military operations
launched by the U.S and the Iraqi forces to crush
terror and outlaws.
President Barzani reiterated the KRG commitment to
the Iraqi constitution which he considered it the
basic source to define the destiny and rights of
all.
Bakeries in Kirkuk close
their shops due to fuel shortage
More than 300 bakeries were closed in Kirkuk due to
not allocating needed fuel by the Kirkuk directorate
of fuel, PUKmedia correspondent reported on Sunday
February the 22nd.
“Out of 624 bakeries in Kirkuk province, only 250 of
them have been licensed to work. 374 bakeries were
obliged to close their shops in Kirkuk due to not
allocating needed fuel by the Kirkuk directorate of
fuel.” Omar Hassan Head of Kirkuk branch of
Kurdistan Workers Syndicate Said.
“The reason behind this is that they do not have
licenses of the Iraqi Grain Board. Those bakeries
have demanded license from Kirkuk office of Iraqi
Grain Board since July, 2007 but until now this
directorate has not responded them, and consequently
Kirkuk directorate of fuel would not give them their
portion of fuel.” He said as well.
Developing German Language
Schools in Kurdistan Region
The Ministry of Education in the Kurdistan Regional
Government (KRG) takes serious efforts to promote
teaching of German Language in the Kurdistan region
schools through opening new schools for teaching
German, being one of the living languages of the
world, and the first language at the European Union
level in terms of number of speakers. In this
context, the KRG Education Minister Dilshad Abdul
Rahman Mohammed, in a press conference expressed his
support for teaching German in the of Kurdistan
region schools as well as all over Iraq...
KRG to allocate $200
million for reconstructing Garmiyan area
Approximately $200 million will be allocated for
reconstruction process in the Kurdistan Region by
the organizations and Donor Countries. Also, the
Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) will allocate
this sum ($200 million) for reconstructing the
Garmiyan area.
The Garmiyan area includes Kalar, Kifri, Chamchamal,
and their surroundings which had undergone the
utterly heinous Anfal Campaign by the former
Baathist regime.
