December 19, 2009

DAMASCUS, (ekurd.net), Khalaf Dahowd, —  The trial of five Kurdish youths (number 182 /2009) due to be tried at the Supreme State Security Court [SSSC] in Damascus on 15 December 2009 has been postponed to 29 December 2009 so that the Court can check their file.

The five Kurds on trial are:

• Monther Abdulfattah Resho, aged 16 at the time of his arrest in 2008,
• Ciwan Mohammed Ahmed,
• Hassan Khalil Qudo,
• Khalil Feedee Dahli
• Manan Ahmed Sido

The charges are in accordance with Article 267 and 302 of the Syrian Penal Code.

We are also informed that the MAD writer and lawyer Mustafa Ismail, who was arrested on 12 December 2009 is now with political security in Damascus.

MAD Syrian Commitee for Human Rights condemns these trials before the Supreme State Security Court and demanded the immediate release of these detainees and of all prisoners of conscience.

The Kurds live in Syria (Syrian Kurdistan), mainly in the north bordering Turkey and Iraqi Kurdistan region. They comprise nine percent of the population and have long sought official recognition of the Kurdish language and their culture.

Future Movement advocates democracy and equal rights for Syria's one million Kurdish minority. The Kurdish language is not allowed to be taught in schools and tens of thousands of Kurds were denied citizenship after a 1960s census.

Freedom of expression remains tightly controlled in Syria, and security forces have sweeping powers of arrest and detention.

A total 1,500 people were arrested for political reasons in 2007 and hundreds more who were arrested in previous years remained in detention,
