Three more Kurds are arrested in Syria  6.12.2009

QAMSHLI, Syrian Kurdistan, (ekurd.net), Khalaf Dahowd, —  According to MAD Human Rights Committee in Syria, the political security forces arrested three Kurdish people in Qamishli in mid-November, for the second time:

• Rezan Nur al-Din Ibrahim, born 1979 in Hillaliya area of Qamishli;
• Saud Abdulkader Ibrahim, born 1975 in Hillaliya area of Qamishli;
• Mohammed Ezadin al-Ahmed, born 1982 in Em al-Kahef village near Qamishli.

These people were first arrested on October 2008, and were sentenced by the judge of the Individual Military Court as follows on charges of belonging to banned political organisation,
www.ekurd.netthe Democratic Union Party [PYD] – and inciting sectarian strife:                       
Rezan al-Din Ibrahim for three months in prison; Saud Abdulkader Ibrahim and Mohammed Ezadin al-Ahmed each for six months.

There is currently no information about the whereabouts of these three people, or information about why they were arrested at this time.

More than 2 million Kurds live in Syria, comprising nine percent of the population. They have long sought official recognition of the Kurdish language and culture.

The Kurds live in Syria (Syrian Kurdistan), mainly in the north bordering Turkey and Iraqi Kurdistan region. They comprise nine percent of the population and have long sought official recognition of the Kurdish language and their culture.

Future Movement advocates democracy and equal rights for Syria's one million Kurdish minority. The Kurdish language is not allowed to be taught in schools and tens of thousands of Kurds were denied citizenship after a 1960s census.

Freedom of expression remains tightly controlled in Syria, and security forces have sweeping powers of arrest and detention.

A total 1,500 people were arrested for political reasons in 2007 and hundreds more who were arrested in previous years remained in detention,
