Program on curriculum development in
Kurdistan presented Dec. 7 at Appalachian

BOONE, — Lori
Mason will discuss her experience living and working
in Kurdistan and her involvement with the Kurdistan
Curriculum Development Project Dec. 7 at 2 p.m. at
Appalachian State University.
Mason is a doctoral student in Appalachian’s
educational leadership degree program. Also speaking
will be faculty members from Appalachian who
recently served as advisers in Kurdistan. They are
James Wilkes (computer science), Melanie Greene
(curriculum and instruction) and Sara Zimmerman
(curriculum and instruction).
The presentation will be held in Belk Library and
Information Commons room 421.
It is sponsored by the university’s Doorways
International Program Series.
Appalachian has partnered with the Ministry of
Higher Education and Scientific Research in
Kurdistan, Northern Iraq and with the U.S.
Department of State to help universities in
Kurdistan revise curriculum and update their
teaching practices.
The project addresses critical gaps in Kurdistan’s
higher education system resulting from more than 30
years of wars and embargos. Priority disciplines to
be addressed in the curriculum reform include
biology,www.ekurd.netchemistry,
computer science, sociology, dentistry, English,
pharmacy, basic medical science, family medicine and
civil engineering.
Mason lived in Kurdistan from 2003-05 and worked
with schools in Northern Iraq. Mason has since
continued to work in the region on various education
and aide projects. She is project manager for the
Kurdistan Curriculum Development Project.
The Doorways series is co-sponsored by Belk Library
and Information Commons and the Office of
International Education and Development. Its goal is
to provide a platform for people to share their
research and knowledge on international issues and
build relationships on campus based on interest in
international affairs.
