December 1, 2009

BOONE, — Lori Mason will discuss her experience living and working in Kurdistan and her involvement with the Kurdistan Curriculum Development Project Dec. 7 at 2 p.m. at Appalachian State University.

Mason is a doctoral student in Appalachian’s educational leadership degree program. Also speaking will be faculty members from Appalachian who recently served as advisers in Kurdistan. They are James Wilkes (computer science), Melanie Greene (curriculum and instruction) and Sara Zimmerman (curriculum and instruction).

The presentation will be held in Belk Library and Information Commons room 421.

It is sponsored by the university’s Doorways International Program Series.

Appalachian has partnered with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in Kurdistan, Northern Iraq and with the U.S. Department of State to help universities in Kurdistan revise curriculum and update their teaching practices.

The project addresses critical gaps in Kurdistan’s higher education system resulting from more than 30 years of wars and embargos. Priority disciplines to be addressed in the curriculum reform include biology,

Mason lived in Kurdistan from 2003-05 and worked with schools in Northern Iraq. Mason has since continued to work in the region on various education and aide projects. She is project manager for the Kurdistan Curriculum Development Project.

The Doorways series is co-sponsored by Belk Library and Information Commons and the Office of International Education and Development. Its goal is to provide a platform for people to share their research and knowledge on international issues and build relationships on campus based on interest in international affairs.
