Change the laws in Kurdistan over "Honor
killings"

Two years ago there were plenty of news and
headlines about honor killings in the Kurdish media
channels. I have noticed that the Kurdish media
channels are paying less attention to honor killing
phenomenon in Kurdistan.
I do not know whether the honor killing phenomenon
has become less and restricted or it is the media
channels do not pay attention to it any more. There
has not been a great change in the mind of Kurdish
society towards women surely and the excuses behind
killing of women are still existed as they were and
not be finished in near future. But here we should
take the role of former cabinet of Kurdistan Region
Government KRG and Nechirvan Barzani in to
consideration regarding confronting of honor killing
in Kurdistan. |

Forming some special police units for preventing
violence against women which has put a limit to the
phenomenon and gave energy to the women to go to
police and complain about the violence.
Sometimes there will be comparisons between Kurds
and other societies in the region, but unfortunately
our society is one of those closed eastern
societies. We cannot say there had not been any
change and development in previous years but the
changes are very slow and not worth mentioning. The
main reason behind this is political power of
Kurdistan region which follows some conservative
mediums of the society,www.ekurd.netinstead
of leading people towards social changes.
If the Kurdish authorities really work for the
development of the society they should not be
reluctant of paving the way for social changes. For
instance the law of personal conditions is does not
fit with this era and KRG claims any more. It is not
possible to proclaim for democracy and human rights
respect on one hand and behave against them on the
other hand.
The new KRG cabinet must keep working on modifying
the rules relating to personal conditions which the
previous cabinet had started. A government considers
itself as democratic government must have secular,
liberal and developed rules.
