TEHRAN, —
According to the Iranian health ministry, there are
more than 5000 persons infected by aids in the
Kurdish regions of Iran (Eastern Kurdistan). Civil
organizations say the numbers are even higher.
The first AIDS case in Iran was in 1987. The
government now says 20.000 people are infected by
aids, but civil organizations say the number is
higher. The gov’t says there are 5000 infected
people in Kurdistan, but unofficial sources say
9000.

There are several factors that play a role. There is
an absence of effective anti-AIDS centers, lack of
AIDS education, ignorance about the disease and an
absence of government attention to this problem.
MP Fakhraddin Haidari argues that the ratio of AIDS
is few compared to other countries. He said that
medical centre’s ignore the issue. “Alas, the
medical centers belonging to the Ministry of Health,www.ekurd.netdo
not give the people necessary information to prevent
this disease,” Haidari said.
