STOCKHOLM,
Sweden, — The Swedish opposition party, the Social
Democratic Party accepted a motion that calls for
recognizing the Seyfo and Anfal genocide. The party
is going to press for international recognition of
these two genocides.
The motion was filed by Claes Nordmark, a columnist
of the biggest Swedish newspaper and involved in a
Kurdish network and part of a Swedish NGO for human
rights in Turkey. There are about 50.000 – 60.000
Kurds in Sweden; most have arrived for political
reasons and his is one of the reasons why Nordmak
thinks it’s important to recognize the genocide
against Kurds.
The Social Democrats want the two genocides to be
recognized by Sweden, EU and UN. Also they want to
have a conference in Sweden about the two genocides
and an international memorial on 16 March for the
victims of chemical weapons.

The ‘Seyfo’ genocide
was carried out by the Ottoman government against
Armenians, the Assyrians / Chaldeans, Pontic Greeks
and Roma in 1914-1918, according to the Social
Democrats. “Scientists do not entirely agree on how
many were actually killed, but the figure is about
750.000 up to over one million,” says the motion.
The Socialist party says the effects are still
visible in Turkey with only a few Assyrians and
Chaldeans left, compared to the one million of
Christians who lived in Turkey.
During the Al-Anfal campaign by the Baath regime
between 23 and 6 September 1998, more than 182.000
Kurds were killed. Also concentration camps were set
up and the best known attack,www.ekurd.netis
the chemical bombing of Halabja on 16 March 1998.
“Al-Anfal was the same method, as used during the
Seyfo genocide,” says the motion. “The genocide must
be recognized for what they really are and the truth
about what happened must be revealed.”
PUKmedia reported the move was hailed by the
Patriotic Union of Kurdistan in a party congress.
