Kurdish Peshmerga forces withdraw from Khaneqin  19.8.2008

August 19, 2008

DIYALA, Iraq,—  A force from the Peshmerga fighters withdrew from the Qurat Teba district in Khaneqin district in Diala, while Iraqi army forces assumed the responsibility there, said a security source.

“The 34th force battalion of the Peshmerga forces withdrew from the Qurat Taba district in Khaneqin,
www.ekurd.net northeast of Baaquba, heading for Kurdistan and the Iraqi army forces received the security responsibility there,” the source, who asked to be unnamed, told VOI.

The Peshmerga brigade, comprising 4,000 troops, was located in Diyala to protect the Kurdish civilians in the district.

“This came after a recent agreement between Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and a delegation from the Kurdistan’s government in Baghdad,” he added.

Iraq's security forces had launched a wide-scale security campaign in Diala province. The operation, codenamed Bashaer al-Kheir, is aimed at tracking down members of al-Qaeda network in Diala, Iraq's most restive city, after the armed group lost its strongholds in the western Iraq predominantly Sunni province of al-Anbar, where tribesmen fought its members and flushed them out of the city.

Diala province extends to the northeast of Baghdad as far as the Iranian border. Its capital is Baaquba, 57 km northeast of Baghdad. It covers an area of 17,685 square kilometers (6,828 sq mi).

A large portion of the province is drained by the Diala River, a major tributary of the Tigris.

Because of its proximity to two major sources of water,
