IWPR Kurdish Editor Mariwan Hama-Saeed
wins second prize in America’s Foreign Press

New York, -- Mariwan Hama-Saeed, a Kurd,
IWPR’s Iraq editor, has been awarded second prize in
America’s Foreign Press Association Future of
Journalism awards. The results of the contest,www.ekurd.net
which recognises
journalistic excellence amongst international
students studying in the US, were announced in
April. Mariwan submitted two of his IWPR reports for
the award.

Mariwan is the Iraq editor for the Institute for War
and Peace Reporting, a London-based organization
that pro-motes free and fair media in Iraq and other
developing countries. He started his journalism
career as a translator for news organizations, and
then free-lanced for Kurdish newspapers. |

In August 2006, he moved to the US to pursue a
master's degree in journalism at the University of
Colorado at Boulder. There, he worked on a research
paper about media in Iraq and supervised a survey of
more than 400 Iraqi journalists.
Currently, he is participating in the Politics and
Journalism Semester at the Washington Center for
Politics & Journalism and is an intern with the
National Journal magazine in Wash. D.C.
He was the first Iraqi chosen for the Journalism and
Democracy fellowship, hosted by the Institute for
the Further Education of Journalists in Sweden in
2006. He just completed his master's degree and
holds a bachelor's degree in English from the
University of Sulaimaniyah in the semi-autonomous
Kurdistan region in 'northern Iraq'.
