Erbil-Hewler, Kurdistan region 'Iraq',-- A
fashion show of Kurdish costumes was held on Monday
in downtown Erbil's Roshinbery Hall under the
auspices of the Ministry of Culture in Iraq's
Kurdistan region.
"The show featured Kurdish costumes that combined
modernity and tradition," Hajar Saber, a supervisor
of the show, told Aswat al-Iraq.
"This does not mean that we are not coping with the
developing demands of society. Kurdish costumes are
the most prominent in our social occasions and
feasts," Saber explained.
Meanwhile, Balên Hajar, a fashion designer who
participated in the show,www.ekurd.net
said that the event was
the second of its kind. "The first show featured
traditional and historical costumes. Today, we have
10 models in 16 designs," Balên said.
Balên added that preparations for the show took
almost a year and the main problem was in finding
the models. "When we announced our need for fashion
models, we had a large turnout. The problem was with
the parents," she explained.
It is a conservative society, where girls should not
work as models, the designer noted.
The show was attended by the deputy culture
minister, Madhi Mandalawi, several local figures and
a very large public, and was covered by several
newspapers and satellite channels.
Erbil, the capital of the autonomous Kurdistan
region, lies 349 km northeast of the Iraqi capital
Baghdad.
