Kurdish MP urges safety measures to protect Iraqis in
Lebanon

BAGHDAD, -- An Iraqi parliamentarian from the
Kurdistan Coalition (KC) on Saturday called on the
government to take all necessary measures to ensure
the safety of Iraqis in Beirut, in the light of the
three-day-old armed clashes that broke out in
neighboring Lebanon between the Hezbollah-led
opposition and the ruling majority led by Saad al-Hariri.
"We call on the Iraqi government,www.ekurd.net
its embassy in Beirut
and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to take urgent
measures to ensure the safety of Iraqis in Beirut,
following in the footsteps of other countries," MP
Abdul Bari Zebari told VOI.
Italia, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait have all
advised their nationals to leave the Lebanese
capital in the aftermath of the eruption of the
clashes.
The parliamentarian expressed his deep regret for
the difficult situation in Beirut, and called on
Lebanese politicians to assume full responsibility
and to work out appropriate solutions for the
crisis.
The Kurdistan Coalition is the second largest
parliamentary bloc, with 55 seats in the 275-member
parliament.
According to figures released by the Human Rights
Watch, there are an estimated 50,000 Iraqi refugees
in Lebanon. Nearly 580 Iraqis are currently under
arrest by the Lebanese authorities for illegally
entering the country.
According to the organization, 298 Iraqis were sent
back to their country in 2006, and 154 others were
expelled this year.
