Kurdistan Regional Government and UNDP
decide water management measures

Erbil-Hewler, Kurdistan region 'Iraq, --
At a social services conference organised by the
Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in cooperation
with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP),
the UNDP decided that in the next few days it will
issue a financed water management proposal to
improve clean water supply in the Region.
The decision came at the end of a three-day
conference organised by the KRG, in cooperation with
UNDP, to inform donor countries of its plans to
improve social services. The conference was the
first of its kind in Iraq,www.ekurd.net
aimed at establishing
new levels of cooperation between the KRG,
international organisations and donor countries. The
KRG has pledged to share the cost of executed
projects.
Mr Omer Fattah, the KRG’s Deputy Prime Minister,
said, “This event is the first of its kind in Iraq
and demonstrates the proactive stance of the KRG
concerning social development. We appreciate the
contributions of all participants.” He added,
“Today, we need the support of the international
community not to protect us from attempted genocide,
but to help us progress and achieve social
development.” |

Mr Paolo Lembo, UNDP Director for Iraq, said, “Water
is everyone's business. Its management must be
coordinated between ministries and all regions in
Iraq. Our focus must be on strategic planning and
the UN must concentrate on the KRG’s well formulated
priorities.” He added, “I have been very impressed
by the quality, specificity and detail of the
projects presented by the KRG at this conference.”
Ambassador Talal Al-Khedery, representative of Mr
Hoshyar Zebari, the Iraqi Foreign Minister, said,
“The topics addressed at this conference are
important for all of Iraq. I commend the different
KRG ministries for their presentations and the
assistance, coordination and cooperation of the
international bodies represented here.”
The Head of the KRG's Department of Foreign
Relations, Minister Falah Mustafa Bakir, said, “This
was an important conference that showcased the close
cooperation between the KRG and the UN. This
cooperation and teamwork will have a positive impact
for all of Iraq.” He added, “Developing social
services in the Kurdistan Region is a key priority
for Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani. Without a
healthy and educated society the KRG's vision for a
bright future will not be realised. The KRG’s
organisation of conferences of this kind is a clear
sign of our commitment to the region, and to all of
Iraq."
The conference was attended by high level officials
from the federal government in Baghdad and the KRG,
including the governors of the Erbil, Sulaimaniyah
and Duhok, who made presentations on the second day.
