Social services donor conference opens in
Iraqi Kurdistan's capital

Erbil-Hewler, Kurdistan region 'Iraq', -- The
first conference to encourage cooperation between
donor countries and the Kurdistan Regional
Government (KRG) on social services projects has
opened in Erbil,the capital of the Kurdistan Region
in Iraq.
During the three-day conference, organised in
cooperation with the United Nations Development
Programme (UNDP), KRG ministries concerned with
aspects of social development will present
development projects to representatives from donor
countries. The KRG has pledged to be an active
partner in potential joint development projects and
will share the cost of executed projects.
Mr Paolo Lembo, UNDP Director for Iraq, addressed
the opening session of the conference. He said, “The
positive difference of this conference is that the
KRG and UNDP are acting in a close and open
partnership to achieve development in the Kurdistan
Region." He added, "This model must be used in the
rest of Iraq.” |

Ms Nermin Othman, the Iraqi Federal Minister for the
Environment and representative of Iraq's President

welcomed the assembled
donors. Ms Othman commended the conference's focus
on waterborne diseases, especially cholera. She
said, “We welcome the important attention this
conference will give to solving the problem of
cholera in Iraq and UNDP’s cooperation in this
regard.”
Attending the conference were senior KRG officials
including Dr Abdul Rahman Osman Yones, the KRG’s
Minister of Health representing Prime Minister
Nechirvan Barzani, representatives from donor
countries including the US, Japan and Sweden, and
members of Erbil’s diplomatic corps.
