Iraqi President Jalal Talabani shows full support of PM's security operation  5.4.2008

Baghdad, -- Iraqi President Jalal Talabani on Saturday expressed his "full" support of Iraqi PM Nouri al-Maliki on the efforts exerted to impose security and law during their first meeting since the week-long major crackdown on Basra.

Talabani applauded "the responsible stand and the outstanding role played by the PM to impose security and law," said a presidential office statement received by VOI.

The announcement added "the two officials agreed to call on the executive council and the political council for national security to convene and activate their roles."

The Iraqi Constitution stipulates ruling Iraq is a shared responsibility between Iraqi prime minister and three-member presidency board along with parliament,

Last week there was intense fighting between the Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr's Mahdi Army militia and the Iraqi security forces in Basra.

The clashes between security forces and militiamen spread to various areas in Iraq, including Baghdad, and hundreds of people were reported killed in days of fighting.
