Barzani's office denies interference in
Anfal case

Erbil-Hewler, Kurdistan region 'Iraq', --
Iraqi Kurdistan Region President Massoud Barzani did
not interfere in the work of the Iraqi Central
Criminal Court (ICCC) to clear four figures from the
Anfal case, a Kurdish official said on Saturday.
"The presidency of the region has supported
establishing a neutral and an independent legal
system in Iraq," and called for "separating the
legal, legislative and executive authorities in
accordance with the Iraqi constitution," Adel
Birwari, a spokesman for Barzani, told VOI.
The spokesman denied reports stating that Barzani
"sent a letter to Judge Muneer Haddad to lift the
names of Wafiq al-Samarrai and three other figures
from the Anfal case.
Anfal (or Spoils of War, taken from Surat al-Anfal
in the Qur'an) was an anti-Kurdish campaign led by
the former regime between 1986 and 1989 and involved
a series of military campaigns against the Kurdish
Peshmerga fighters as well as the mostly Kurdish
civilian population of southern Kurdistan.
