SULAIMANIYAH, Kurdistan region 'Iraq', --
Iraqi Vice President Adel Abdul-Mahdi arrived in the
province of Sulaimaniyah city to brief Iraqi
President Jalal Talabani on the outcome of the reent
Damascus summit, an official source in Talabani's
Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) said on Monday.
"Abdul-Mahdi will also discuss with Talabani other
issues including security developments in Iraq in
light of the military campaign waged by the
government forces against armed groups in southern
Iraq," the source, who declined to be named, told
VOI.
Abdul-Mahdi had arrived in the Syrian capital on
Friday to lead his country's delegation to the 20th
Arab summit, convened on Saturday and Sunday.
The vice president's media advisor had said
Abdul-Mahdi expressed reservations over the final
communiqué on the grounds that it did not refer to
the Iraqi government's efforts to enhance national
reconciliation in the war-torn country.
Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa, reading
out the final statement of the summit, had called
for "maintaining the Iraqi people's unity, enhancing
the country's Arab and Islamic identity, realizing
comprehensive national reconciliation and speeding
up the end of foreign presence" in Iraq.
The PUK, one of the two main Kurdish parties, is
part of the Kurdistan Coalition (KC), the second
largest bloc with 55 out of a total 275 seats in the
Iraqi parliament.
The Kurdish province of Sulaimaniyah, Kurdistan's
cultural capital, lies 364 km northeast of the Iraqi
capital Baghdad.
