BAGHDAD,-- Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi
encouraged on Monday that the Kurdistan regional
government implement the legislation of General
Amnesty as a "Federal law," to facilitate the
process of releasing detainees from detention
centers supervised by the region's authorities.
"In two messages that he sent to Massoud Barzani –
president of Kurdistan Region, and Nechirvan Barzani
– premier of Kurdistan regional cabinet,www.ekurd.net
al-Hashemi appreciated
the good efforts to corroborate and reinforce law's
superiority in Kurdistan region," said a release
issued by al-Hashemi's office and received by VOI.
The release quoted al-Hashemi, "We hope to see the
day when detainees implied by the General Amnesty
Law will be released in Kurdistan region, especially
when considering that it is a Federal Act,"
believing this to be a "step that goes beyond its
legal purport to be a step forward on the national
reconciliation's path."
The Iraqi Presidential Council ratified the General
Amnesty Law by the end of February 2008. The law
pardons huge numbers of Iraqi detainees, exclusively
in Iraqi detention centers, and according to certain
terms and conditions.
