UK: Drunk's racist rage with baseball bat  8.2.2008

Halifax, UK, -- A Drunk who screamed racial abuse while he beat a man to the ground with a baseball bat has been jailed.

Mohammed Kareem, 29, attacked the man in front of his wife and 12-year-old sister, and caused hundreds of pounds of damage to cars on Queen's Road, Halifax.

Bradford Crown Court heard Kareem, an Iraqi Kurd, drunkenly screamed racist abuse about Pakistanis and Muslims during the attack.

Gavin Howie, prosecuting, said: "Kareem was standing drunk in the middle of the road when Mr Nazir, who was driving with his wife and 12-year-old sister, beeped his horn at him.

"Kareem took the baseball bat from out of his sleeve and hit Mr Nazir's blue Mondeo with it. When he got out of the car, he was hit in the arms, ribs and stomach. He fell to the floor and was kicked a number of times.

"Kareem turned to another driver, saying 'all Pakistanis are the same' and 'I will kill them all,' before punching his car repeatedly."

Kareem, of Roger Lane, Huddersfield, caused L500 damage to the cars and left Mr Nazir bloodied from the attack just after noon on July 5 last year.

He pleaded guilty to possessing an offensive weapon and racially aggravated assault.

Giles Bridge, for Kareem, said: "His partner recently had a miscarriage which caused them great distress.

"Drink is an issue he is trying to address."

Judge Christopher Prince,
www.ekurd.net who jailed Kareem for 12 months and made an application to deport him, said: "There is absolutely no place in our society for the foul abuse that you came out with."
