Azad Jindiani: No journalists in Kurdistan region brought to justice for freedom of speech  7.2.2008

Sulaimaniyah, Kurdistan Region 'Iraq',-- A diplomatic delegation from the Regional Reconstruction Team-Kurdistan Region of the US Embassy in Iraq visited the PUK Central Media Office in Sulaimaniyah on Wednesday. The delegation included both John Seevra and Daniel F. McNicholas.

The purpose behind their visit was to be more acquainted with the condition of journalism in Kurdistan Region. PUK party leaded by Iraqi president Jalal Talabani.

At the first part of the meeting Azad Jindiani, head of PUK Central Media Office talked about the process of journalism in Kurdistan region highlighting the articles of Kurdistan Region Journalism Draft Law indicating a letter by the PUK Central Media Office sent to the Kurdistan Region President demanding more freedom of journalism in Kurdistan region.        

Azad Jindiani is Member of PUK Leadership Committee, and Head of PUK Central Media Office.

Jindiani talked about Article 10 of Kurdistan Region Journalism Draft Law, which is about lawsuits against journalists, explaining with examples that no journalists in Kurdistan region were brought to Justice for freedom of opinion,
www.ekurd.net but all those cases have been for defamation stating that the PUK Green Bloc in Kurdistan region parliament has the same view.

Regarding the report by Michel Robin, Jindiani clarified for the delegation that some parts of it contains general facts , while the second part of it contains defamation , which should be treated through the law because any accusation without adequate documents are considered as defamation. Therefore, the delegation also said that they are not with most of the report.

Finally the delegation made clear that the meeting, which lasted for one hour, was very useful and they have got full information on the conditions of media and journalism in Kurdistan region.
