commits suicide
A female announcer in the Kurdish satellite TV
channel Kurdsat shot herself inside her house in the
city of Sulaimaniyah on Monday, a source from the
channel said.
“Layla Ali worked today as usual and in the
afternoon returned home in Zarkata neighborhood,
northern Sulaimaniyah, where she shot herself with a
gun,” the source said.
“The reasons behind the suicide are not yet clear,
but investigations are ongoing,” he added.
The Kurdsat is broadcasting from Sulaimaniyah, in
Iraqi Kurdistan region.
Born in 1971, Ali started her broadcasting career at
the Khak TV and later at Kurdsat, both based in
Sulaimaniyah.
Kurdistan’s parliament
debates provincial council bill
The Parliament of Iraq’s Kurdistan region on Tuesday
held a regular session, headed by Speaker Adnan
Mufti, to debate a draft law on the region’s
provincial councils.
“Amendments have been introduced to the bill,” Mufti
told VOI.
He postponed the session “until completing the
required amendments to the bill.”
KRG deeply regrets Gaza
attacks
The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has
expressed its “great” regret over the Israeli air
strikes on the Gaza Strip, calling on all parties to
immediately stop all military activities.
“We have been following up on the situation in the
Gaza Strip, which has reached a stage of congestion
that claimed many civilian victims…,” according to a
statement published yesterday on the official web
site of the government.
The Kurdistan Regional Government called on the
parties involved to stop escalation and the use of
force.
Hundreds of Palestinians were reported dead or
wounded after Israeli F-16 bombers launched a series
of air strikes against multiple targets in the Hamas-run
territories. Israel said the operation was in
response to rockets fired into Israeli towns and
villages by Hamas and other militant groups based in
Gaza.
250,000 olive trees to grow
in Kurdistan
A 10-day campaign to plant 250,000 olive trees in
different parts of Iraq’s Kurdistan region was
wrapped up on Tuesday, the chairman of the Maan
(Together) Association for the Protection of
Environment and Human Being said.
“Today, we completed the planting of 250,000 olive
tree cuttings in Erbil, Sulaimaniyah and Duhok, in
cooperation with the ministries of agriculture,
higher education, and the sport and youth, in
addition to two organizations: Greenpeace and
Kurdistan Volunteers,” Saadiya Ahmed told VOI.
Based in the Iraqi capital Baghdad, Maan Association
for the Protection of Environment and Human Being
was established in 2005.
