Sweden: KRG Nordic Representation presents
'Kurd of the Year' awards at annual gala

This
year’s Kurd of the Year award was shared by KOMAK, a
children’s rights organisation that runs educational
programmes in Kurdistan, and by Lars Demian, the
Swedish folksinger and supporter of Kurdish people’s
rights.

Stockholm, Sweden, – The Kurdistan Regional
Government (KRG) Nordic Representation last Thursday
hosted the third annual Kurdish gala to present
awards to outstanding Kurds and friends of the
Kurds.
In his speech Mr Taha Barwary, the KRG Minister for
Sport and Youth, said, “Over the years Sweden and
Kurdistan have forged a very close friendship,
thanks to our Swedish friends who have long stood by

Sweden has encouraged young Kurds to celebrate their
Kurdish roots whilst preserving their active
participation in Swedish society.” |

He added, “Our close friendship has provided a
constant flow of information and know-how from
Sweden to the Kurdistan Region. We welcome even
closer ties through constitutional, political and
infrastructural support.”
This year’s Kurd of the Year award was shared by
KOMAK, a children’s rights organisation that runs
educational programmes in Kurdistan, and by Lars
Demian, the Swedish folksinger and supporter of
Kurdish people’s rights. Mr Sven Otto Littorin, the
Swedish Employment Minister, presented the award to
Komak, which was behind the Kurdish translations of
the famous Swedish children's stories, ‘Pippi
Longstocking’ and ‘Alfons Aberg’.
The judging committee said that folk singer Lars
Demian was selected “For bringing the message of the
Kurdish struggle to folk-festivals and for his use
of the musical arena to show his support and love
for Kurdish people.” Mr Demian wears a Kurdish flag
on his latest album cover.
The Friend of the Kurds Honorary Award went to Ms
Ulla Hoffman, a member of the Left Party and one of
the founders of the Swedish Parliamentary Network
for Kurdistan.
Among the 400 guests at the Södra Teatern theatre
were Mr Sven Otto Littorin, Minister of Employment;
Ms Mona Sahlin leader of the Social Democratic
Party; Mr Lars Ohly,www.ekurd.net
leader of the Left
Party, Ms Anne-Marie Bergström, the Equal
Opportunities Ombudsman; Ms Katri Linna, the
Ombudsman Against Ethnic Discrimination; Ms Nicole
Verstraete-Dishner from the US Embassy in Stockholm;
and Mr Ahmad Bamarni, Iraq's Ambassador to Sweden.
The winners were selected by the judges Ms Lawen
Mohtadi, a free-lance journalist, Ms Zian Zandi, a
TV and radio presenter, Mr Newzad Hirori, head of
the Kurdish Library in Stockholm, and Mr Georg
Kristiansen, a photographer who has worked
extensively in Kurdistan.
Stand-up comedian Özz Nüjen hosted the gala, which
included performances by comedian Soran Ismail,
singers Dilba Demirbag and Baxan, and musician Hajar
Zahawi.
The KRG Nordic Representation and the Kurdish
Student and Academic Society in Sweden (KSAF)
announced the best academic essays produced at
Swedish academic institutions on Kurdistan-related
subjects. Ms Nistiman Husseini, president of KSAF,
awarded them to Ms Samire Zarei and Mr Salam
Kadirzadeh.
