Snowstorm hits Iraq's Kurdistan region  6.1.2008

Sulaimaniyah, Kurdistan Region 'Iraq', -- For the first time this winter, a snowstorm struck Iraq's Kurdistan provinces of Erbil and Sulaimaniyah on Saturday morning, according to eyewitnesses.

"Snow covered large areas of Erbil province, including northern Shaqlawa, Souran and Juman, as well as Salah al-Din,
www.ekurd.net in addition to Sulaimaniyah city for the first time this year," local eyewitnesses said.

Other eyewitnesses from Duhuk's Zakho city spoke of snow covering the mountainous areas of their province, 460 km north of Baghdad.

Sulaimaniyah Airport flights stop due to bad weather

Flights were cancelled into Sulaimaniyah International Airport several times over the past couple of days due to bad weather conditions,www.ekurd.net the airport chief said on Saturday.

"The airport's administration denied landing to two airplanes coming from Istanbul and Dubai and instructed the airplanes in the airport not to take off due to the bad weather conditions," Kamran Ahmed Soliman said.

Rainfall and snowfall weather, which resulted in closing roads and paralyzing the traffic movement. In Penjwin the highway of Sulaimaniyah-Penjwin has been closed on Sunday due to the snowfall, which reached a thickness of 35cm.

While in Sulaimaniyah, the rainfall reached an amount of 24mm during the past 24 hours and the snow reached a thickness of 4cm.

Meteorology reports stated that this wave is going to be continued till January 8th.

Erbil, the capital of Iraq's Kurdistan region, lies 349 km northeast of the Iraqi capital, while Sulaimaniyah, Kurdistan's cultural capital, lies 364 km northeast of Iraqi Baghdad.
