US calls on Iran to account for Kurdish
student’s death

WASHINGTON,-- The United States on Wednesday
joined a rights group in calling for a full
investigation into the death of a Kurdish law
student in Iran after he was detained in the western
city of Sanandaj in Iranian Kurdistan.
“The United States is deeply concerned about the
tragic death under suspicious circumstances of

an Iranian student of
Kurdish descent detained by the Ministry of
Intelligence on Jan. 6,” US State Department
spokesman Sean McCormack said in a statement.
“We call on Iranian authorities to conduct a full
investigation,” McCormack said. |

The 27-year-old student’s family disputes the
official determination that he committed suicide and
wants his body exhumed to determine the cause of
death, an attorney representing the family said on
Sunday.
US-based Human Rights Watch has also called on the
Iranian authorities to investigate the “sudden
deaths” of Lotfallahi and Zahra Bani-Ameri, a
27-year-old female physician, who died in October
while in custody in the town of Hamedan.
In both cases, officials said the cause of death was
suicide, the rights organization said.
Mr. Ebrahim Lotfollahi, a Kurdish law student,
died in the prison
of Sanandaj, in Iran’s Kurdish northwestern region
(Iranian Kurdistan), on January 15th, 2008. Mr
Lotfollahi was arrested, for unknown reasons, on
January 6th, 2008. According to the Iranian

Mr. Lotfollahi committed
suicide,
however, his family, who had visited him a few days
prior to his death, claims that he was then in good
spirits. Mr. Lotfollahi was burried without the
autorisation from his family who had requested in
vain for
an autopsy to
be conducted.

Kurdistana Rojhilat (Eastern Kurdistan) or Rojhilatę
Kurdistan (East of Kurdistan)) is an unofficial name
for the parts of Iran inhabited by Kurds and has
borders with Iraq and Turkey. It includes the
greater parts of West Azerbaijan province, Kurdistan
Province, Kermanshah Province, and Ilam Province.
Kurds form the majority of the population of this
region with an estimated population of 4 million.
