January 6, 2008

Kermanshah, Iranian Kurdistan,-- Iranian security forces killed a number of foreign-backed rebels in its western Kermanshah province, which has a substantial population of minority Kurds, the Fars news agency reported Sunday.

"A saboteur gang which was equipped and organised by foreign intelligence services was dismantled last night," deputy Kermanshah governor Hojatollah Damyad said.

"In last night's clashes, some of these counter-revolutionary elements were killed," he said, adding that the fighting took place in an area between Ravansar and Kamyaran,

Damyad said the group, which had been formed to "create insecurity and discontent in the region and block the government's services to the people" was stopped before it could carry out any operations.

Iran's Kurdistan, Kermanshah and West Azarbaijan provinces, which have substantial Kurdish populations, have been the scene of clashes between Iranian forces and Kurdish separatist militants of the Party of Free Life of Kurdistan or PJAK.

The Kurdish rebel group PJAK (Party of Free Life of Kurdistan), has been behind a string of deadly attacks on the Iranian revolutionary guard in (Iranian Kurdistan), northwestern Iran in recent months.

The present leader of the organisation is Haji Ahmadi. According to the Washington Times, half the members of PEJAK are women, many of them still in their teens, and one of the female members of the leadership council is Gulistan Dugan, a psychology graduate from the University of Tehran. This is due primarily to the fact that PEJAK is strongly supportive of women's rights. PEJAK believes that women must have a strong role in government and must be on an equal level with men in leadership positions.
