Dr Hoshiar Molod, (eKurd.net), -- In the beginning
of the war on Iraq in 2003, the American army was
attacking forcefully from the south. The Kurdish
nation was counting the days to get rid of the
fierce regime of Saddam Hussain. At that time all
Iraq was living in misery; in Kurdistan people were
not only living a normal life, but the Kurdish
leaders were also offering to send Peshmarga forces
to fight alongside the USA army. Kurdistan and the
Kurdish leaders were cherished by and considered to
be an ally to the USA.
During the war, even though George W. Bush was
asking European countries and others to join the USA
in this war, he did turn the Turkish offer down to
send troops into Kurdistan. The reason for that was
because the USA considered Kurdistan as a friend and
didn’t want to offend them,www.ekurd.net
especially when the
Kurdish President, Mr. Massoud Barzani, stated that
Turkish troops would have to cross over our dead
bodies.
Baghdad fell and the war against the Iraqi army sort
of ended and the Kurdish leaders, together with
other leaders in Iraq, started a new transitional
government. Since that day Kurdish politics went
down hill. Kurdish politicians succeeded in turning
their old friends in to enemies and upsetting their
enemies further. The Kurdish President decided to
take the Iraqi flag down in Iraqi Kurdistan, which
made the rest of Iraq, Turkey and all the Arab
countries very angry. Kurdistan politicians didn’t
consider the influence that those countries could
play on the USA, because they were counting on the
support of the Kurdish nation.
Every intellectual Kurd’s opinion anywhere in the
world considered this period as a new era in Kurdish
politics. They had all been predicting that this
time was not like any other time in the history of
Kurdish politics. This time the USA was on the
Kurds’ side and they would not let the Kurds down.
The Kurd intellectuals were correct for a while;
however things changed.
The situation changed in a way that the USA took
Turkey’s side over Kurdistan even though Kurdistan
has been the only ally inside Iraq in this last war.
The new strategy by the USA is not because of
Turkey’s considerable progress in industry as
compared to Kurdistan. It is not also because Turkey
is an active member of NATO and has a modern army.
Kurdistan has a better financial future than most
countries in the region, including Turkey. Kurdistan
has access to the largest oil reserves in the world,
which easily match or exceed Turkey’s wealth. The
question that is asked then is why the USA favours
Turkey over Kurdistan, even though Kurdistan had
been an ally to the USA in this last war?
It is simply because of the failure of Kurdish
politics in Iraq and the region. The Kurdish leaders
lost communication with the Kurdish streets and the
Kurdish intellectuals.
The USA wouldn’t listen to the Kurdish politicians
only; they also listened to the Kurdish streets and
the Kurdish intellectuals inside and outside
Kurdistan. The USA found out that the Kurdish
leaders have alienated everyone around them. The
Kurdish leaders have no friends because of the way
they rule the Kurdistan region, which has given rise
to certain behaviours such as nepotism, corruption
and disregard of human rights.
The USA’s policy in Iraq and in the region is
changing towards calming the region down. They have
to calm Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Syria down. They
have to calm Turkey down by no longer supporting a
strong Kurdish region in Iraq. Four years ago the
USA would have turned down Turkey’s plea to enter
Kurdistan,www.ekurd.net
because Kurdistan was
considered a democratic place and because the
Kurdish nation was in support of their regional
government.
The USA has to calm Saudi and Syria down by no
longer allowing Iraq to become a non-Arab country
and also to give power back to the Sunni Arabs in
Iraq at the expense of the Kurdish people.
The USA has to make a choice between Kurdistan and
Turkey and they are about to choose Turkey. It’s the
time for Kurdistan to wake up from the long lasting
sleep; it is a make or break time.
The Kurdish Leaders have to reconsider their
policies and their impact on the Kurdish people, the
region and the rest of the world. They have to start
changing the corrupt system to a just system, where
everyone is accountable for their actions, no matter
how influential have they become.
Every nation’s fate is decided by the people, and
the leader is one of those people, but with more
influence.
The ship is sinking; it is up to the Kurdish leaders
to stop it!
