Sulaimaniyah, Kurdistan Region 'Iraq', --
Iraqi President Jalal Talabani has announced that he
will sue Hawlati, one of Iraqi Kurdistan’s two
independent newspapers for publishing the summary of
an article wrote by Michael Rubin that criticized
the Iraqi Kurdistan leadership for abusing press
freedom by harassing independent newspapers with
frivolous lawsuits.
Reported, that warlords Talabani and Barzani will
sue Michael Rubin for the Anti-Kurdish report he
wrote early this month called “Is Iraqi Kurdistan a
Good Ally?” [read the article], also to sue Kurdish
newspaper Hawlati for translating the report from
English to Kurdish.
Both warlords started also a court process against
Lebanese two-monthly newspaper Al Adab for
publishing an article criticizing the situation in
Kurdistan called “Criticizing the sense of criticism
: Iraq – Kurdistan as a model”.
Furthering the irony, Talabani will use Article 433
of the Iraqi Criminal Code, a hold over from the
Baathist era,www.ekurd.net
which equates almost all
criticism of leadership, even if true, with
defamation.
On December 20, 2007, the Iraqi Kurdish parliament
had moved to overturn this rule, but was itself
overruled by the Kurdish leadership.
