Armenians in Iraqi Kurdistan celebrate New
Year amid hopes of security

Armenian Orthodox community celebrates the New Year
on Sunday, January 6, amid hopes that 2008 will be a
year of stability and security for all Iraqis.
"We celebrate the New Year on January 6 while
praying for more stability for the Armenian
community in Iraq's Kurdistan region," Nirsisan from
the Armenian community in Duhok said.
The dean of the Faculty of Education in Duhok
University, Lewis Caropanda, described the
celebration as a good opportunity to foster unity
among Iraqis.
We hope that security and stability return to every
part of this country, the dean said.
Voicing his wishes for the New Year, Sarkis Arozyan,
a displaced person from Baghdad, said he hopes that
2008 will be a year of welfare and peace for all
Iraqis,www.ekurd.net
regardless of their
religion or denomination.
There are an estimated 20,000-25,000 Armenians in
Iraq and Kurdistan, mostly in Duhok, Baghdad and
Mosul.
Duhuk, the capital city of Duhuk province in
Kurdistan region, lies 460 km north of the Iraqi
capital Baghdad.
