Sulaimaniyah, Kurdistan region 'Iraq',--
Owner of the Kurdish newspaper Hawlati was released
on bail after being
arrested Wednsday morning
by Kurdish police for publishing an article that
allegedly criticized Ali Fattah the brother of the
Kurdish deputy premier, Omar Fattah.
Tariq Fateh, the owner of the independent
Sulaimaniyah- based newspaper, said the police
released him on 200,000 Iraqi dinars ($150) bail in
light of a decision by the examining magistrate.
The press councilor of the newspaper, Twana Othman,
said earlier that local police forces in
Sulaimaniyah raided the headquarters of the
newspaper in Aqari area in the center of the city
and arrested its owner.
"Fateh's arrest is related to a complaint filed
against him by the brother of Kurdistan's deputy
prime minister, who accused Fateh of publishing an
article against him," Othman explained.

Othman and the paper's former editor-in-chief, Asos
Herdi, currently the editor-in-chief of Awene
newspaper were referred to the court last February
in a case raised by the former Kurdish premier Omar
Fattah, Sulaimaniyah directorate, who accused the
newspaper of publishing an article slandering him.
The two were sentenced to six months behind bars,
but the judgment was stayed and a 75,000 Iraqi
dinars ($50) fine was issued for each of them..
Hawlati is bi-weekly independent newspaper issued in
Sulaimaniyah, established in late 2000 as a first independent newspaper issued in
Kurdistan region.
Despite the demand for news in Iraqi Kurdistan,
there are only two private newspapers Hawlati and
Awene. All other media in Kurdistan is funded by the
political parties, which these days are synonymous
with the Kurdistan Regional Government.
