Kurdistan PM visits Sulaimaniyah to support anti-cholera task force  6.9.2007

September 6, 2007

Sulaimaniyah, Kurdistan region (Iraq), --  Nechirvan Barzani, Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), on Saturday visited the city of Sulaimaniyah to give his full backing to the government’s efforts to stem the cholera outbreak.

Barzani allocated additional funds to support the task force that has been set up to deal with this emergency case and to treat patients and prevent new cases. The task force would receive all the necessary support, supplies and funds, he said.

The Prime Minister received a full assessment of the situation from Dr Zryan Yones, the KRG Minister for Health, the Provincial Governor, local water and health and municipalities authorities, and the Country Director of World Health Organisation.

The Prime Minister discussed not only short-term and immediate measures but also long-term solutions to eradicate the disease. He called for a meeting to discuss the city’s water shortages and to find qualified and capable partners to implement a water project and to update the distribution network to solve the shortages in the long term.

On the Prime Minister’s instructions, 40 water tankers and additional supplies of chlorine were sent from Erbil and Duhok provinces to Sulaimaniyah. The city of Kirkuk , which similarly suffered a minor outbreak of cholera, also received assistance from the KRG.

Prime Minister Barzani asked the media to give an accurate picture of the situation, adding that the health authorities would provide regular status reports. Based on the reports and the updates the situation seemed to be under control.
