Iran: Kurdish journalist's sister tells of his death row ordeal  22.8.2007

August 22, 2007

Mariwan, Iranian Kurdistan, -- Dissident Kurdish journalists Adnan Hassanpour and Hiwa Boutimar, both sentenced death by an Iranian court are now in their 39th day of a hunger strike, accepting only water and a handful of salt per day, Hassanpour's sister Leyla told.AKI.

"Lawyers who have been able to meet my brother and Hiwa say they are skin and bone. You don't need to be a medic to understand they are in a pitiful physical and mental state," she said.

"They have never been seen by a doctor since they began their hunger strike," she added.

"Tehran is convinced that they can kill two Kurds with impunity by allowing them to die in prison," said Leyla. She urged the Italian and French government as well as Italian campaign groups to prevent "the slow death to which Adnan and Hiwa seem condemned.

“Effective action from Rome and Paris is our only hope of preventing my brother and Hiwa's sentencing to death by hanging being transformed into a slow, agonising death," she stated.

Two Italian groups, Article 21 and Information, Safety & Freedom have petitioned the Italian government and the European Union to intervene over Hassanpour and Boutimar.

They journalists were sentenced to death last month for being 'enemies of God'. They wrote for the Kurdish-Farsi news magazine Asu (Waves) which was closed by the Iranian authorities in August 2005.
