Sulaimaniyah, Kurdistan region (Iraq), --
Hundreds of local residents from Sinkser district,
northeast of Sulaimaniyah, took to the streets to
protest against Iranian shelling of their villages
and called for damages to be paid to the victims,
the head of the district, Abdullah Ibrahim, said on
Wednesday.
"The demonstrators expressed their condemnation of
the shelling of their villages…They gave me a
protest note to deliver to officials in which they
called for a halt to the shelling and damages to be
given to the victims…," Ibrahim said.
"We want the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to
demand the Iranian government to stop the shelling,"
said Sarkoot Hassan, a teacher who took part in the
demonstration. "Many residents have become homeless
and are facing hard times," he added.
According to DPA about 1000 Kurds in Sulaimaniyah
protested the shelling, and called on the Kurdish
government to take extreme measures.
For three weeks Iranian forces have been shelling
cross-border regions in Qaleat Daza district, 135 km
northwest of Sulaimaniyah, Haj Omran, 185 northeast
of Kurdistani capital of Erbil, and Penjuin
district, 96 northeast of Sulaimaniyah. Severe
damage to property and forests was reported,
according to Kurdish sources.
Sinkser district is on the border with Iran and has
been subject to repeated shelling by Iranian forces.
It is located 150 northwest of Sulaimaniyah, which
lies about 364 km northeast of Baghdad.
