August 14, 2007

Baghdad, -- Iraqi Vice President Adel Abdul Mahdi discussed with Iraq's Kurdistan President Massoud Barzani the on-going preparations for the political blocs' leaders meeting expected to convene within the upcoming days, Mahdi's office said in a statement on Monday.

"A date for the meeting that will include Iraqi President along with his two deputies, the Prime Minister and Iraq's Kurdistan President will be set within the next 48 hours," the statement quoted Abdul Mahdi as saying.

The statement added "the meeting will discuss the means necessary to handle the lingering issues in Iraq as to governance, decision-making and laying out general policies."
On Sunday, a statement released by the presidency office said Iraqi President Jalal Talabani and Iraq's Kurdistan President Massoud Barzani discussed in Baghdad means to push the stalled political process forward and to handle the lingering problems.

"The two officials held talks addressing latest political developments in the Iraqi arena and in Kurdistan region," the Iraqi president's office said. The Kurdish leaders also stressed on the significance of a true participation by the blocs "in governing the country, decision making and laying out public policies."

"Presidents Talabani and Barzani emphasized the need to meet the legitimate demands of the people in Iraq's Kurdistan region and the importance of the role played by the Kurdistan alliance in finding solutions to the political crisis through bringing together conflicting views held by different political blocs," the statement also added.

The two sides, the statement noted, discussed the means and mechanisms necessary to push the political process forward for serving the public good, rescuing the country from the current dilemma, solving the lingering issues through dialogue and intensifying the frank and active consultations among the political blocs in the upcoming days.

Earlier on Sunday, Kurdistan Presidency said in a statement that Iraq's Kurdistan President Massoud Barzani arrived in Baghdad to take part in a meeting scheduled for leaders of parliamentary blocs on the security situation in the country and means to get out from the crisis that affected the political process in Iraq.

"President Barzani left to Baghdad, on Saturday evening, heading a political and administrative delegation representing Kurdistan region to participate in the meeting scheduled for Iraqi political leaders," Kurdistan Presidency office said Sunday. They added "Barzani will act, during this visit, to handle the current Iraqi crisis between the Iraqi government and Kurdistan region government."

It is scheduled that President Barzani will start his meetings and talks with Iraqi political leaders, including Iraqi President Jalal al-Talabani and Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, as early as Sunday, the statement noted. Barzani's visit to Baghdad was delayed until the return of the Iraqi Premier Nouri al-Maliki from a visit that included Turkey and Iran.

Iraqi President Jalal Talabani will hold a lunch banquet on Tuesday in honor of Iraqi Kurdistan region President Massoud Barzani and Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, a member of the committee preparing for the Iraqi political leaders meeting said.

"The Iraqi president will host a banquet to be attended by Barazani, who is now on a visit to Baghdad, and Maliki, as well as others," Fouad Ma'soum said.

On statements made by Iraqi Vice President Tareq al-Hashimi that he had not received an official invitation to attend the political blocs leaders' meeting, to be convened in Baghdad in hours, Ma'soum said, "...the party of Hashimi is participating in the works of the preparatory committee. Thus, the matter does not require an invitation. No invitations were sent to Maliki, Talabani or Barzani."

Yunadem Konna, a member of parliament and leader of the Assyrian Democratic Movement, said that Tuesday's meeting will be attended by the five main blocs of the Iraqi parliament.
