BAGHDAD,--A statement released by the Iraqi
presidency's office on Wednesday dismissed reports
by Turkish newspapers about an alleged attempt by
Turkish intelligence on the life of Iraqi President
Jalal Talabani as "totally unfounded."
"Quoting unnamed sources, Turkish newspapers claimed
that the Turkish Intelligence Agency (MIT) had
attempted to assassinate Iraqi President Jalal
Talabani," in a statement.
"The president's office stresses that this news is
baseless. What has been published about the arrest
of a network that was allegedly assigned to
assassinate the president is the product of the
writer's imagination…," the statement indicated.
"The president is extremely keen to establish its
best relations with neighboring Turkey and to foster
friendship and mutual cooperation in a way that
serves the interests of the people of both
countries," the statement added. |
