Syrian opposition agreed to award the Kurds the right of self-determination  5.7.2007

Dr Jawad Mella and Dr Rifaat Al-Asad : We agreed to award the right of self-determination to the Kurds of Syria.

July 5, 2007

Announcement by Dr Jawad Mella President of the Western Kurdistan Government to the United Press International regarding a way to solve the Kurdish cause in Syria that delighted all the liberation lovers of Kurdistan and distressed the enemies and agents. The following is the announcement as published by Al-Marsad Al-Sury:

“President of Western Kurdistan Government” announces a pact with the United National Assembly lead by Dr Rifaat Al-Asad, the former Deputy President of Syria.

Mella: We agreed to award the right of self-determination to the Kurds of Syria.

The Kurdish opposition activist Dr Jawad Mella who established the Western Kurdistan Government in Exile announced a new pact with the former Deputy President of Syria Dr Rifaat Al-Asad who leads the United Nation Assembly in order to found a true Syrian opposition and activate its actions.

In an interview with the United Press International Mella said: we had two meetings with Dr Rifaat Al-Asad the last one was in the last month in his house in London during which we discussed the broad lines of the pact and we agreed to go back to Syria, we also discussed the ways to solve the problems of the peoples in Syria that have been ignited by the ruling Baathist regime (and added) we presented a number of points and thoughts as a foundation for a stable pact and a real opposition on the basis of our mutual belief that the (deserted former Deputy President of Syria) Abdulhalim Khaddam and the Moslem Brotherhood are not serious in finding any solutions for the Syrians, Arabs or Kurds, because Khaddam was part of the regime itself and one of its founders and also the Brotherhood in my opinion are more chauvinistic and racist than Baath, I think that they are Baathists wearing Islamic cloths and turbans.

Mella uncovered that he had agreed with Rifaat Al-Asad that “there is a Kurdish people as well as Arab people in Syria”. We also agreed to “award the Kurds in Syria the right of self-determination, and working towards the formation of a Syrian parliament abroad with both main nations Arabs and Kurds to establish a Government in Exile in a later stage”.

The Kurdish opposition activist said “at the moment we are working to hold a general conference for all the Syrian opposition activists and movements abroad with the exception of the Salvation Front lead by Khaddam”. He anticipated that the conference should be held in London during the coming few weeks.

Mella was asked whether the suggested pact between the Kurdistan National Congress that he declared to contain opposition Kurdish activists and organizations and the United National Assembly was ub response to the opposition Salvation Front established by Khaddam and the leader of Moslem Brotherhood Ali Sadraddine Al-Bianooni and other opposition personalities last year, he answered “our pact is not in response to the Salvation Front but to their activities as opposition in general and their attitude towards the Kurds especially, as they in the Front say that Kurds are our brothers and they have some distinguished Kurdish members with them”. He said “this is a simpleminded talk rejected by the Kurds, had they been sincere in their tendencies the Salvation Front would have announced awarding the Kurds in Syria the right for self-determination”.

Mella described accusations against him by some factions of the Syrian opposition that he has separatist tendencies by “not accurate” and regarded their surprise of his pact with a nationalist assembly “illogical”. He said “basically, I demand a Kurdish identity that allows the Kurds to maintain their personality, foundations, traditions and culture, and rule themselves by themselves.

Unfortunately, the totalitarian thought of the region and especially of the Baath regime would not allow this identity and would not even allow awarding us the Syrian identity that we have been asking for, for the past 40 years”. Mella added “this denial of the existence of the Kurdish people is leading us to extreme views and because of it we are accused of separatism. In reality it is the regime who caused the situation by isolating, marginalizing and denying the existence of three million Kurds”.

He stressed that “he is asking for the identity of the Kurdish people within the borders of one future Syria” but he admitted “he supports the independence for the Kurds in the present situation of Syria because of their continuous subjection to persecution and oppression”.

He said “if the time comes and there was a situation that guarantees the right of self-determination for the Kurdish people such as in the pact that we have agreed to with Rifaat Al-Asad, and there was a true citizenship and admission of the existence of the Kurdish people as people and not a minority, then we leave out our tendencies (pointing out that the pact with Rifaat Al-Asad) would be finalized after coming to the final agreement in the aftermath of the general conference planned in London.

Mella supported the existence of Rifaat Al-Asad among the ranks of the opposition by saying “I as a Syrian Kurdish opposition believe that he is playing a real role as an opposition different from the role of Khaddam, because he has his own political, military and popular strength in Syria and he intends to activate his role inside the Syrian opposition after forming the pact (he
indicated that) in later stages he will discuss with Rifaat Al-Asad whether this pact would take the way of national reconciliation with the regime or demanding its fall”.

** Kurds are the largest ethnic minority in Syria making up 10% of the country's population i.e. about two million.

Kurds in Syria often speak Kurdish in public, unless all those present do not. Kurdish human rights activists are mistreated and persecuted. No political parties are allowed for any group, Kurdish or otherwise. Suppression of ethnic identity of Kurds in Syria include: various bans on the use of the Kurdish language; refusal to register children with Kurdish names; replacement of Kurdish place names with new names in Arabic; prohibition of businesses that do not have Arabic names; not permitting Kurdish private schools; and the prohibition of books and other materials written in Kurdish.
