Contractor in Iraq learns fate of rescued dog
July
26, 2007
COLUMBIA, SC,-- A story you first saw on WIS
News 10 Monday is bringing smiles to Americans in
Iraq.
We told you how a lot of folks in Iraq helped give a
dog named Mary a new life in America, but they
didn't know what happened to her until they saw it
on WIStv com.
Mary is a Kurdish sheep dog rescued by American
special forces in Iraq. She's now living in
Columbia.

It seems she's still the topic of conversation in
one Iraqi town. One of the contractors who cared for
her called his wife from Iraq to tell her he saw our
story on the internet. She tells WIS News 10's Kara
Gormley, "He was just happy for Mary and excited
that she did find a home."
She says Mary was not only a pal; Mary and other
dogs in Iraq are lifesavers. "If a dog were to bark
it would tell them someone's coming, and it would be
an added protection for them to have dogs over
there."
Protection is why we aren't telling you her
husband's name, so there's no chance terrorists will
track her family down in the US. She says, "The
internet's open. He can't even use his real name
because you could find us here."
We can tell you her husband's a dog person. They
have three of their own. His wife says, "I have a
Great Dane and two pound puppies we rescued from a
shelter."
