Sulaimaniyah, Kurdistan region (Iraq), -- The
editor in chief of the Kurdish newspaper Germiyani
Emro, Lawan Ahmad, has been detained by the Kurdish
security forces in the town of Kalar, Germiyan. He
was accused of defamation, reported the internet
website of Kurdish biweekly Hawlati on Wednesday.
Ariyan Rauf, the head of the Kurdish Human Rights
Organisation in Germiyan told Hawlati that the
Germiyani Emro newspaper purposefully defamed his
name and reputation with accusation of using the
organisation’s vehicle for his personal use. He did
not deny doing so. Rauf told Hawlati that he changed
the number plate form the official one to his
private one fear of terrorist attacks.
Meanwhile a reporter of the Kurdish biweekly Hawlati
is detained by the Kurdistan authorities in the town
of Halabja, reported Hawlati’s internet website on
Wednesday.
Rebaz Ahmad, Hawati’s reporter for Halabja area, has
been detained by the authorities in Halabja because
of a report that he compiled and published in
Hawlati regarding corruption in the council of the
town. He is detained under the Article 433 of the
Iraqi Penal Code.
The Kurdistan authorities, despite the new Iraqi
constitution, still use Saddam Hussein’s Penal Code
in prosecuting media professionals. The infamous
Article 433 is used in most of these cases which was
legislated to restrict freedom of expression and
press by the ousted government of Saddam Hussein.
