The autonomous northern Iraqi Kurdistan region is
heating up as both Iran and Turkey attacked several
border towns with artillery fire over the weekend.
Various reports also indicate that Iran has amassed
troops along its border with Kurdistan, as has
Turkey.
A border patrol in the district was also attacked by
a local terror group. Seven people were killed in
the attack, including six policemen and a civilian.
Ansar Al-Islam, which is also known as Al-Qa’ida in
Kurdistan said it was behind the attack.
Both Iran and Turkey have been engaged in the past
few months in fighting within their territories
against Kurdish rebels affiliated with the Kurdistan
Workers Party (PKK). However, recent reports
indicate that for the first time both the Turkish
army and the Iranian Revolutionary Guards have
simultaneously fired artillery on Kurdish border
towns, according to the London-based daily Al-Quds
Al-'Arabi.
Quoting Kurdish security sources, the paper reported
that Iran has also closed the Bashmakh border
crossing between Iran and east Kurdistan. The
crossing is used mainly for the transfer of
merchandise into Kurdistan.
Meanwhile, Kurdish sources report that Turkey has
increased its military presence near the border in
the past week.
According to the report, there are now 200,000
Turkish troops along the northern border.
The Turkish army is pressuring the government to
immediately attack PKK headquarters in Kurdistan. It
is expected, however, that the military operation
will only begin – once approved – after the Turkish
parliamentary elections scheduled for July 22.
