Erbil-Hewler, Kurdistan region (Iraq), --
Iraq's Kurdistan region's cabinet is currently
considering a number of proposals that it said will
relieve pressure on the general budget, a Kurdistan
Regional Government (KRG) source said on Wednesday.
"Kurdistan finance minister Sarkis Aghajan and the
region's Minister for Financial Affairs Bayz
Talabany suggested granting half-pay holidays to
employees who work in the private sector," spokesman
for the KRG, Jamal Abdullah, said.
Abdulla did not give more details of the proposal,
but explained that employees who will benefit from
the scheme will not be able to return to their
former positions in the future.
"The two ministers also suggested cutting down the
number of bodyguards assigned to protect Iraqi
officials and working in political offices," the
spokesman indicated, calling on the government to
introduce a system to limit the number of public
security personnel.
Iraq's Kurdistan President Massoud Barzani said
during a visit to Duhok three weeks ago that 75% of
the region's budget is allocated to salaries for
government employees.
The KRG called on Iraq's federal government to pay
the salaries of the 190,000-strong Kurdish Peshmerga
forces (Kurdistan national guard) that are assigned
to protect the region, but the Iraqi government said
reducing their number to 90,000 is a condition for
payment.
