Sulaimaniyah, Kurdistan region (Iraq), -- A
survey by Radio Nawa, which is based in
Sulaimaniyah, questioned Kurds on whether or not
they would prefer the current Kurdistan Regional
Government (KRG) Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani to
retain the post of prime minister or vacate the
position at the end of the year. A majority of those
taking the survey said they would prefer to keep
Barzani in
office.
The director of Radio Nawa, Kurda Hassan, told
Peyamner News Agency that he could not announce how
many people took part in the survey because it was
done by a computer system, but he gave a rough
estimate, saying that tens of thousands of people
were surveyed.
According to Hassan, 84.9% of participants surveyed
voted "no" to changing the current prime minister,
and the rest voted "yes." He also mentioned that 30%
of the votes were disqualified because of improper
voting, while 70% of the votes were accepted. |

He didn't mention how
the votes were improper. The survey, which took six
days, asked: "Do you think it would be better if we
changed prime minister at the end of the year?"
The current KRG Cabinet by Barzani was announced in
May 2006, when the two main Kurdish parties,
Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), led by Massoud
Barzani, and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK),
led by Jalal Talabani, unified their Erbil and
Suleimaniya administrations into one regional,
unified government.
They agreed to a deal that would allow each side to
run the government for two years, and the first
round would be governed by the KDP, who chose
Barzani as prime minister.
The end of 2007 is when the prime minister post will
be handed to the PUK, and the two parties have begun
holding meetings to rearrange their alliances and
relations. After a meeting early last June, KDP
leader Massoud Barzani said that they are committed
to the agreements signed with the PUK.
