Washington, D.C.,-- During a visit to the
United States, Minister Falah Mustafa Bakir, Head of
the Kurdistan Regional Governments (KRG) Foreign
Relations Department, last week discussed key
strategic policy issues with Ambassador David
Satterfield, the US Secretary of State’s Senior
Advisor and Coordinator for Iraq and other senior
government officials.
Minster Bakir said, “In our meeting, I urged the US
Government to continue its political and economical
engagement with the KRG and stressed the need to
develop and build upon the good relations that we
have already developed.” He added that as strong
allies of America , the KRG welcomed the US presence
and efforts in Iraq .
During the meeting, Ambassador Satterfield said that
he and the US government appreciated the critical
role played by the Kurds, both in Baghdad and in the
Kurdistan Region and added, “We were pleased that
the recent visit by myself, and Deputy Secretary
Negroponte to Iraqi Kurdistan produced positive
results and progress on Iraq’s Revenue Sharing Law”.
He went on to say that the progress was in no small
part due to the leadership of KRG Prime Minister
Nechirvan Barzani. Ambassador Satterfield urged all
Iraqi politicians to work to ensure that the
hydrocarbons law, a key benchmark, passes parliament
and becomes ratified.
Ambassador Satterfield expressed the US government’s
full support for Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri Al-Maliki
to achieve progress and stability in Iraq .
On the role of the regional states vis-a-vis Iraq,
both Minister Bakir, and Ambassador Satterfield
strongly believed that it would be in the interests
of all parties for Iraq’s neighbours to play a
constructive role in Iraq’s development. Minister
Bakir stressed the KRG's commitment to a federal,
democratic and pluralistic Iraq which lives in peace
within itself and with its neighbours.
Minister Bakir thanked the US Government for its
initiatives in supporting the KRG's efforts to
encourage foreign investment to the Region and he
was glad of the opportunity to tell the US
Government that the KRG fully supports private
sector investment.
During his stay in D.C., Minister Bakir, accompanied
by Qubad Talabani, the KRG’s Representative to the
US, discussed Kurdish-US relations and the current
situation on the ground in Iraq and Kurdistan with
senior White House and Defence Department officials.
Mr Talabani and Minister Bakir discussed the work of
the KRG Representation Office in Washington, the
role of the Kurdistani community in the US, and how
the Kurdistan Region can benefit from cultural,
educational, business and investment ties with the
US.
