Erbil-Hewler, Kurdistan (Iraq), July 5,-- The
official spokesman for Kurdistan's protection forces
Peshmerga (Kurdistan national guard) said on
Thursday that the forces are ready to be sent to
Kirkuk to protect the Baiji-Kirkuk road.
"The Peshmerga fighters are ready now and we have
taken all preparations to send them to protect
Baiji-Taza, to protect the electricity lines which
feed the Kurdistan region and also the oil pipelines
between Baiji and Kirkuk," Jabar Yawar said.
"The region's protection forces have other missions,
in addition to protecting the infrastructure,
including supporting the Iraqi government's forces
(police, army, security)," he added.
"The forces that will be sent are the Kurdish
Peshmerga, not the Kurdish brigades of the Iraqi
army," he also said, noting that the Kurdish
brigades do not need official agreement from the
Kurdistan government.
"There are other Peshmerga forces ready to be sent
to Samara to protect religious shrines in the city
and they wait the Iraqi government's approval," the
spokesman noted.
"The forces have provided the Multi-National Forces
in Kirkuk and Diala with support many times to help
boost security and fight terrorism," Yawar noted.
Kurdistan Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani said
yesterday during a press conference that the Iraqi
government had agreed to send Kurdish forces to
protect the road that connects Baiji to Kirkuk so as
to secure the electricity and oil supply to
Kurdistan.
"The Kurdistan government suggested sending Kurdish
forces to protect the holy shrines in Samarra," he
added.
Kurdish brigades of the Iraqi defense ministry,
which was stationed in the Kurdistan region were
sent to Baghdad in early 2007 to take part in the
Fardh al-Qanoon security plan.
