Kurdistan Alliance asked Ankara to respect Iraq's sovereignty  24.7.2007

July 24, 2007

BAGHDAD, Iraq, --  Kurdistan alliance bloc in Iraqi parliament on Monday called Turkey to respect Iraq’s sovereignty after Ankara has been threatening to carry out a military operation if the triple committee conversations can’t solve the problem.

"Turkey should respect Iraq as a sovereign country having a democracy and respect Iraqi citizens will", said Abdul Bari Zebari, the Kurdistan Alliance representative in Iraqi parliament.

Meanwhile Iraqi government delivered two protest memos to Turkish government. The first was about sending expired foods and medicines and the second was about shelling Kurdistan Region by Turkish army.

Iraqi government stated its will to negotiate with United States and Turkey about the PKK issue.

Iraq's Kurdistan region welcomed the results of the Turkish elections, Adnan al-Mufti, the Speaker of Kurdistan Region Parliament, "We hope that these results will be a step forward in Turkey ’s progress and in the building of its prosperous future and also for establishing the best of relations between Federal Iraq and Turkey.”

Officially, Turkey does not recognise the regional government of Kurdistan led by president Massoud Barzani.

Kurdish politician says, Turkey is using a Kurdish separatist PKK rebel group as an excuse to invade Kurdistan region (Iraq) to prevent the establishment of Kurdistan state in the Kurdish autonomous region in (northern Iraq). Ankara is anxious to prevent the emergence of a Kurdish state in (northern Iraq), fearing this could fan separatism among its own large Kurdish population in southeast Turkey .

More than 37,000 Turkish soldiers and Kurdish PKK guerrillas have been killed since 1984 when the PKK took up arms for self-rule in the country's mainly Kurdish southeast of Turkey.
