Erbil-Hewler, Kurdistan region (Iraq), -- A
minister in the Kurdistan Regional Government said
Wednesday that essential changes have been made to a
draft law, hinting that the Kurds might reject it.
The Kurds made clear Wednesday they oppose the
latest draft of the bill, which al-Maliki said on
July 3 had been approved unanimously by his Cabinet.
His aides say the draft was passed after changes
were made to an earlier version Kurds had said they
supported.
But some Kurdish officials have shown reservations,
saying that the draft law reduces the region's
power.
"I believe that the latest amendments that were done
to the draft oil and gas law reduce the powers of
Kurdistan region and should not be approved,"
Natural Resource Minister Ashti Hawrami told a joint
meeting of the Iraqi and Kurdistan regional
parliaments in the capital city of Erbil.
"The amendments that were done to the draft law were
essential," the minister said.
Iraqi Government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh said the
amendments done to the draft «were legal and dealt
with the language but did not change the core of the
draft -- which have not been made public — "were
legal and dealt with the language but did not change
the core.".
The Cabinet endorsed one version of the legislation
last February. But the Kurds protested that that
measure was unconstitutional because it gave too
much power to a yet-to-be-established national oil
company in managing the country's oil fields.
