Kurdistan dream, letter to the Korea Times editor  29.6.2007
By Nawzad Kareem

June 29, 2007

Dear Editor,

First, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Korean government and the Korean people for their support of Kurdish people in Iraqi-Kurdistan. Their contributions have been very fruitful and outstanding from cultural exchange, establishing schools, clinics and hospitals to training local management teams on how to operate in a free market and a democratic system.

I read your editorial, "Pullout From Iraq,’’ June 18, 2007, passionately during my last visit to your beautiful city Seoul. I was a little bit surprised to see your firm and rigid stand on the Korean army base in Iraq. You concluded your article with a very clear message, "There are no more reasons, moral or practical_ left to force the idle Korean troops to stay in an increasingly dangerous country.’’

I am having trouble agreeing with you for two main reasons; first of all, they are not in Iraq, they are based in Kurdistan, so called northern Iraq,  the unfortunate and tragic fate of Kim Sun-il happened outside Kurdistan’s regional government’s control, we do regret this tragedy.

Second, the Korean Army is not in the war business or to protect people from terrorism and civil war. They are a team of military engineers, medical staff, cultural attaches _ business promoters, bankers, artists, etc.

The closest example to their noble work will be what the U.S. army did in Korea some fifty years ago. We Kurdish people in northern Iraq, appreciate what the Korean people have done for us and what they are planning to do for us in the future.

We also have an aggressive economical plan and vision to become the second Dubai in the Middle East.

We are the only secular administrative and society in the region with less than 6 percent of our directly elected regional parliament controlled by religious parties. Our economy will flourish, and Kurdistan will be the second Dubai. We need to work together.

Nawzad Kareem
