President Massoud Barzani said on June 25 that
survivors and families of the victims of the 1988 Anfal campaign should be justly compensated,
Kurdistan Satellite Television reported the same
day.
Barzani noted that the guilty verdicts in the Anfal
trial prove that genocide and crimes against
humanity were committed against the Kurdish people,
and therefore just compensation needs to be given to
victims at all levels. "We will work very seriously
with the federal government to make sure people are
compensated, at all levels.
All sides should try, at least, to alleviate the
effects of this massive disaster. I am not saying to
eliminate the effects, as nothing can eliminate
them," Barzani said.
On June 24, the Iraqi High Tribunal
sentenced three former Iraqi officials to death,
including Ali Hasan Al-Majid, known as "Chemical
Ali," for their roles in the Anfal campaign against
the Kurds. |
