US Deputy Secretary of State Negroponte visits Iraqi Kurdistan  19.6.2007

Erbil, Kurdistan region (Iraq), -- US Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte, Ambassador Daniel Speckhard, Director of Strategic Governance and Economic Effects at the US Embassy in Baghdad and Director of the Iraq Reconstruction Management Office, and Mr David Satterfield, senior advisor on Iraq to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, on Thursday and Friday, June 16, visited Erbil for meetings with officials of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

Deputy Secretary Negroponte conveyed President Bush's commitment to the democratic political process in Iraq and
thanked the KRG for the positive role it is playing in resolving current difficulties.

KRG President Massoud Barzani thanked President Bush and the people of the US for their brave and continuing sacrifice, and spoke fondly of the special relationship between the two sides. President Barzani further pledged that the KRG would continue to play an instrumental role in all areas of the Iraqi political process. 

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte

Deputy Secretary Negroponte also met with Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani, Deputy Prime Minister Omer Fattah, and other KRG officials. The Prime Minister thanked the US for its efforts in Iraq. He emphasised the need for stronger determination at the federal level to solve problems and the importance of a continued US presence to help stabilise the political environment.

In wide-ranging talks, the KRG and US Government officials also discussed the political situation in Kurdistan and the rest of Iraq and the role KRG is playing; the progress of the Baghdad security plan; amendments to the Iraqi constitution; and negotiations regarding the revenue sharing law.

Throughout the meetings the KRG expressed its willingness to continue working towards improving the situation in the rest of Iraq, and its desire to maintain peaceful and friendly relations with all fellow Iraqi's, as well as neighbouring countries.
