Russian delegation holds talks on opening consulate in Iraqi Kurdistan  18.6.2007

June 18, 2007

Erbil, Kurdistan region (Iraq), -- A Russian delegation held talks with Falah Mustafa Bakir, director of foreign relations for the regional government in the de facto autonomous Kurdistan region in northern Iraq -- often termed Iraqi Kurdistan -- and discussed Moscow's plans for opening a consulate in the region, the Web site of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), pukmedia.com, reported on Sunday.

The delegation was led by Vaciv Garayiv, who has been nominated to become regional consul of the Russian Federation. Bakir told Garayiv that the Iraqi Kurdish administration would lend the necessary support to Russia for opening a consulate in the city of Erbil, which is accepted as the regional capital. Garayiv said the consulate would be opened in a short period of time.

Russia to open Consulate in Kurdistan region
The administration in Kurdistan region (Iraq) recently announced that Greece had decided to open a consulate there.

There have been previous reports that Britain has appointed a consul to Erbil and that France was planning to establish an office there connected to the embassy in Baghdad.

Earlier this month, when reminded of other countries' initiatives for opening consulates in Kurdistan region (northern Iraq), Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesperson Levent Bilman said Ankara considers embassies, consulates general and permanent representative offices opened as foreign missions anywhere in Iraq to be the counterparts of Iraq's central government, but not of local administrations.
