Iraqi Kurdistan's judges meet at their
union's first congress

Kurdistan-Egypt,-- Al-Azhar Grand Imam from
Egypt Sheikh Mohamed Sayyed Tantawi has accepted an
invitation from Awqaf (religious endowment) minister
in Iraq's Kurdistan to visit the region, a senior
media source said on Monday.
"Kurdistan's Awqaf Minister Mohammad Shakeli, who is
currently visiting Egypt, met with Sheikh Mohamed
Sayyed Tantawi and invited him to visit Kurdistan,"
Head of media department in Awqaf and Religious
Affairs Ministry Marewan al-Naqshabandi said, noting
that the grand Imam accepted the invitation. |

Al-Naqshabandi did not set a date for the visit.
The minister also met with Egypt's Mufti Ali Gomaa.
Commenting on the importance of the rule of law for
economic development, the Prime Minister said, “On
many occasions during our meetings and interviews
with businessmen and investors inside and outside
the country we are asked: ‘How can we protect our
investments?’ The response to this question should
be found in the courts. It is very important to
provide legal guarantees to all concerned.”
Mr Farouq Jamil Sadiq said he believed that this
congress was the first of its kind in Iraq. Echoing
the sentiments of the Prime Minster, he said, “It is
of the utmost importance that judges should be free
of interference from political parties”.
He said that the Ministry for Justice totally
supported the impetus behind the congress.
The congress was attended by members of the
Kurdistan Judges Union; Dr Kemal Kirkuki, Deputy
Speaker of the Kurdistan National Assembly; Mr Norul
Rasheed, Head of UNAMI’s Human Rights Section, as
well as several KRG officials.
