BAGHDAD, June 12, -- Iraqi parliament's First
Deputy Speaker Sheikh Khaled al-Attiyah called on
Turkish leaders to favor talks instead of armed
conflict to solve their problems with Iraq.
"Iraq's Kurdistan region witnessed mortar attacks
over the past few days against towns on the
Iraqi-Turkish borders by the Turkish army, on the
pretext of hunting members of the Kurdistan Workers
Party (PKK)," a statement released by al- Attiyah's
office said.
"We denounce these acts and urge Turkish officials
to favor talks to solve the problem and to prevent
any complications in the good relations between the
two countries," he added.
The Iraqi foreign ministry presented an official
protest note to the Turkish charge d' affaires
regarding the shelling of regions inside Iraqi
territory in Duhok and Erbil.
The military situation witnessed a dangerous
escalation last week on the borders between the two
countries after reports of Turkish forces'
penetration inside the Iraqi territories, only two
days after Turkish intermittent shelling of border
towns.
